Lockdown Blog: Sue
Supporting you Through Lockdown
Self-directed support Advisor, Sue, has kindly shared her perspective of supporting families and individuals through Cornerstone SDS during the Coronavirus pandemic.
“I am one of six self-directed support Advisors, covering the whole of Aberdeenshire. I have worked for Cornerstone SDS from home as an Advisor for the last six years, and it’s a top job.
“Although I am a key worker, I work more behind the scenes (currently, in my comfies). My usual role would be to support people who have chosen to manage their own care packages. SDS offers people a choice about who cares for them or a loved one. I help employers to recruit and retain carers, supporting employers to ensure their packages are compliant and loved ones are safeguarded through various means. Our packages range from a few hours a week to 24-hour care.
“Over the last eight weeks, my role has changed to support employers through some very anxious times. Particularly for those who have to make changes to their care due to shielding or are unable to carry out their normal activities. Employers have required support with retention of Personal Assistants, furlough, layoffs and redundancies. We have also taken on the role of ensuring packages have a suitable supply of PPE, enabling carers to provide essential support safely.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of all the SDS carers and families who have managed so well through a worrying and uncertain time. I would also like to say thank you to the Occupational Health Assistants who have been fantastic getting PPE to those who need it.
“Although this has been stressful at times, I count myself one of the lucky ones. I am still working, and I am still able to help families that need support. I feel blessed that I can step out of my door to my menagerie, my garden, and see my youngest daughter and her family who live right next door.
“Our team at Cornerstone SDS have pulled together to continue delivering a first-class service. We have supported each other through some of the darker days, and I am sure we will come out the other side stronger than ever before.”
